# Notion dashboards for lawyers: 6 views that run your week

Six Notion views run a lawyer's week: deadlines due in seven days, overdue items, active matters by key date, actions waiting on others, unbilled time and new intake. Each is a filtered view of one database, placed on a single home page in the order you check them.

## Key takeaways

- A dashboard is a page of linked views, not a separate database.
- Six views are enough. If you add more, remove one.
- Each view needs a filter, a sort and only the properties you read.
- Build views from your databases; do not copy data onto the dashboard.

## What is a Notion dashboard for lawyers?

A Notion dashboard is a page that shows linked views of your databases, each filtered to answer a question. Nothing is duplicated; the page simply displays slices of Matters, Deadlines, Actions and Time. The aim is a single page that tells you what needs attention this week.

| View | Database | Filter | Sort |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1. Due this week | Deadlines | Date within next 7 days; status not done | Date ascending |
| 2. Overdue | Deadlines and Actions | Date before today; status not done | Date ascending |
| 3. Active matters | Matters | Status is Open | Key date ascending |
| 4. Waiting on others | Actions | Status is Waiting | Due date ascending |
| 5. Unbilled time | Time | Billable checked; Billed unchecked | Date ascending |
| 6. New intake | Matters or Clients | Stage is Intake | Opened descending |

## Which views catch what cannot be missed?

Views 1 and 2 are your safety net. Due this week shows deadlines in the next seven days; Overdue shows anything past its date and not completed. Put Overdue first on the page: an empty Overdue view is the goal, and a non-empty one should be impossible to ignore.

1. Add a linked view: On your Home page, type /linked view of database and pick Deadlines.
2. Set the filter: Date is within Next week, and Status is not Done.
3. Sort and show: Sort by Date ascending; show only Title, Date, Matter and Type.
4. Repeat for Overdue: Date is before Today.

## Which views show where matters stand?

View 3, Active matters, lists open matters ordered by Key date so the most urgent sits on top. A board grouped by Stage shows the pipeline. View 4 lists actions waiting on someone else, a classic place for matters to stall. Add a property Chase on which is a date, and sort by it.

A useful variant is a Needs a nudge view: Status is Waiting and Chase on is before today.

## Which views protect revenue and intake?

View 5 shows billable time entries not yet billed. Check it before each billing run. If the sum keeps growing, billing is slipping. View 6 shows new matters still in intake, so enquiries are not left unanswered and conflict checks are not skipped.

In Notion you can show a sum in a table footer, such as the total of Minutes in Unbilled time. Use it as a quick gauge.

## How do you lay out the home page?

Order matters more than decoration. Use this top-to-bottom order, and keep the page short enough to read without scrolling much on a laptop.

1. Overdue
2. Due this week
3. Waiting on others
4. Active matters
5. New intake
6. Unbilled time

Use two columns only if each stays readable. Add a New matter button at the top. Resist charts and decoration until the list views earn their keep.

## How do you keep the dashboard honest?

A dashboard is only as good as the data behind it. Set a weekly five-minute review: clear Overdue, update Waiting, close finished matters. Use a cleanup view of records missing a date, status or matter. If you share the workspace, restrict who can edit the Deadlines database so dates are not changed by accident, and review your access and confidentiality settings before putting client information on a shared page.

## FAQ

### How do I make a dashboard in Notion?

Create a page, add linked views of your databases with the slash command, set a filter and sort on each, and arrange them in the order you check them. A dashboard shows existing data and does not duplicate it, so edits show in both places.

### How many views should a lawyer's dashboard have?

About six. Overdue, due this week, active matters, waiting on others, unbilled time and new intake cover a normal week. If you keep adding views, the page stops being scannable. Remove a view each time you add one.

### What is a linked database view?

It is a view on a page that points to an existing database rather than creating a new one. You can give it its own filter, sort and layout, which is how one Matters or Deadlines database appears in several dashboard sections.

### Can I show overdue items automatically?

Yes. Filter a view for dates before today and status not done. The view updates as dates pass and statuses change, with no automation required. You can also add a formula property that labels overdue rows.

### Should clients see my dashboard?

Generally not. A dashboard shows many matters and likely client confidential information. If you want client-facing status, build a separate page limited to one client's matter, and review sharing settings and your confidentiality obligations first.
