# Our Manifesto: Structure First, Tools Second

Our manifesto is a set of opinions: a practice runs better when the structure comes first and the tools second, when every tool states its limits, and when you own the system you rely on. These are beliefs, not facts, and you are free to disagree.

## Key takeaways

- Structure before tools: clear records beat clever software.
- Honest limits: say what a tool does not do.
- Own your system: simple, exportable and understandable by you.
- These are opinions of the people who make LawyerOS, and we have a commercial interest.

## What we believe

1. A matter should be one record, findable in seconds, with a next action.
2. Dates are sacred. Every deadline lives in one place that you look at daily.
3. Procedures belong in writing, because memory fails on bad days.
4. A tool that hides its limits is a risk. Trust accounting, court rules and e-filing deserve specialist systems.
5. Simple beats clever. A small system you update is better than an elaborate one you abandon.
6. AI is useful when it reads tidy structure and a lawyer reviews the result.
7. You should be able to leave. Keep data exportable and the structure legible.

## Why this matters to us

Our founder trained as a lawyer and then built legal technology for years. The lesson we took away is that most failures were about unclear process, not missing features. That is why we publish guides on structure and sell a template rather than software.

Interest declared: We sell LawyerOS, a Notion template. Our beliefs favour that kind of product, so test them against your own experience.

## What we promise and do not promise

| We aim to | We do not claim to |
| --- | --- |
| Explain trade-offs plainly | Replace legal advice or your regulator's guidance |
| State what a template cannot do | Offer trust accounting, e-filing or hosting |
| Link to official sources | Know your jurisdiction better than you |

## In practice, structure first looks like this

A solo lawyer who follows these beliefs opens one page on Monday morning and sees active matters and what is due this week. A procedure for opening a file exists in writing. Closed matters are archived, not deleted, and a status says why. When AI is used, it is used on tidy records and checked by the lawyer. None of this needs a particular tool; Notion happens to make it cheap to try.
