# AI in Notion for Lawyers: What It Is and What to Watch

Notion AI adds writing, summarising and question-answering features inside your Notion workspace. For lawyers it suits first drafts of internal notes, summaries of your own pages and tidy-up tasks, but every output needs lawyer review, and confidentiality settings must be checked before client material goes near it.

## Key takeaways

- Good fits: summarising meeting notes, tidying drafts, extracting action items from your own pages.
- Poor fits: legal research you will rely on without checking sources, or anything you cannot verify.
- Notion AI requires a Notion plan or add-on that includes it; check current plan details.
- You remain responsible for supervising outputs, as with any assistant.

## What can Notion AI do?

Notion's AI features change often, so check the product pages for the current list. In general, they let you generate and rewrite text on a page, summarise content, pull out action items, and ask questions across pages you can access. Notion also describes agents that can carry out multi-step tasks in your workspace.

## Tasks that suit it and tasks that do not

| Task | Fit | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Summarise your own meeting notes | Good | You know the source and can check it quickly |
| Extract action items into the Actions database | Good | Easy to verify against the notes |
| Tidy a rough internal memo | Good | Low risk, you review it anyway |
| Draft client advice | Careful | Needs full lawyer review and judgment |
| Find case law | Poor | Generative tools can produce wrong citations; use a research database |

## Questions to settle before using it

1. Does your bar or regulator have guidance on AI and client data? Read it.
2. What does Notion say about how AI features handle your content and whether it is used for training? Read the current documentation.
3. Which pages can the AI see? Notion generally works with content a member can access, so tidy permissions first.
4. Do your clients need to be told? Many engagement letters now mention AI use.
5. Who reviews the output, and is that recorded?

ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 2024) addresses generative AI and the Model Rules. It is a useful reference for US lawyers; other jurisdictions have their own guidance, so check your own regulator.

## Where LawyerOS fits

LawyerOS Pro with AI includes a Custom AI Agents page in the template, which relates to Notion's AI features and requires a Notion plan that includes them. We sell it, and the template does not add AI of its own. Read our agents article and AI ethics page first.

## A cautious first trial

Pick one internal, non-confidential page, such as notes from a training session. Ask the AI for a summary and a list of action items, then compare against the original and note every error or omission. If you would not have signed off the result as written, you have learned how much review the tool needs. Repeat with a slightly harder task before touching client material.
