# Why Notion? Our Reasons and Its Limits

We build on Notion because its databases, views and relations let a lawyer shape a matter system cheaply and change it quickly. We also say plainly that it lacks trust accounting, court-rules calendaring and integrated billing, so it will not suit every practice.

## Key takeaways

- Strengths: databases with views, relations, low cost, flexibility.
- Limits: no regulated accounting, no court-rules engine, no e-filing.
- We sell a Notion template, so we have a commercial interest.
- Alternatives are legitimate; see our comparisons.

## Our reasons

| Reason | Why it matters for a practice |
| --- | --- |
| Connected databases | Matters, deadlines and tasks can link instead of being copied |
| Saved views | One record set answers many daily questions |
| Cost | Free and paid per-member plans; check current pricing |
| Flexibility | Change structure as your practice changes |
| Ownership of structure | You can see and edit every property |

## Where we say no

- Client money: use accounting software designed for your regulator's rules.
- Court-rules deadline calculation: use specialist tools and check dates yourself.
- Heavy billing: dedicated billing or practice software may serve better.
- Zero design work: pick a vendor-run system.

## Interest declared

We sell LawyerOS: LawyerOS is a Notion template: Starter $49, Pro with AI $99, one-time payment, 7-day refund. Our preference for Notion is genuine but not neutral.

## Questions to ask of any workspace tool

- Can I understand and change how it is structured?
- Can I export everything?
- What does it cost for my team size at current pricing?
- What does it do with my data, and what do its security documents say?
- What will I still need elsewhere?

## How to test whether Notion fits your practice

1. List the five things you check every Monday: for example deadlines this week, active matters, unanswered client emails, unbilled time and open tasks.
2. Build only a Matters and a Deadlines database and link them.
3. Run one real week using only those views, keeping your current system as the record.
4. Note what you still had to do elsewhere, and what you stopped doing.
5. Decide: extend it, keep it as a working list, or stay with your current software.

A one-week test costs little. It is more reliable than any argument we could make, including this page.

## What to keep outside Notion

| Function | Where it belongs |
| --- | --- |
| Client or trust money | Accounting software built for your regulator's rules |
| Court-rules deadlines | A specialist rules tool, then your own check of the rules |
| Invoicing and payments | Billing or accounting software, with Notion holding the status |
| Source documents under strict controls | A document management system, with a link in Notion |
| Filing with a court | The court's own e-filing system |

Notion works best as the layer that shows what needs attention, linking out to systems that hold the regulated detail.

## FAQ

### Is Notion the best option for lawyers?

Not for everyone; it suits tracking and organising well.

### Is Notion compliant for law firms?

We do not claim compliance. Review Notion's documentation and your regulator's rules.

### Why not build software instead?

A template keeps data in your own workspace and cost low.

### Do you recommend leaving practice software?

Only if it is not serving you; see our guide.

### What does it cost to try?

Notion has a free plan with limits and paid per-member plans; check current pricing. LawyerOS is a separate one-time template purchase with a 7-day refund.
