What to look for
A good free template has clear database relations, sensible default views, and a written explanation of how it is meant to be used. A bad free template is a single Notion page with a list of headings and no underlying structure. Most are the second kind.
The categories worth your time
- Matter management templates with at least three related databases.
- Time tracking templates with rollups to a Matters database.
- Intake form templates that include a Status pipeline.
The categories to skip
- "Lawyer dashboard" templates that are decorative without underlying data.
- Templates with no documentation. You will spend longer reverse-engineering them than you would building from scratch.
- Templates that gate functional pieces behind a paid tier.
Where to find good ones
Start with the template library on this site, then review any community template before using it: check its database relations, documentation and licence, and test it on dummy data first.
