Notion Custom Agents for law firms: what they can and can't do

Notion Custom Agents are AI agents that run on a schedule or when something changes in your workspace. Law firms can use them to triage new enquiries, compile weekly deadline digests and draft matter status updates for review. They need well-structured databases, a plan with Notion AI and credits, and firm rules on confidentiality and human review.

What are Notion Custom Agents?

Notion introduced Custom Agents in early 2026. Unlike the personal Notion Agent you prompt directly, Custom Agents run on schedules or event triggers, can be shared across a team, and act on pages and databases they are given access to. Later 2026 releases added easier fine-tuning, lighter models that use fewer credits, AI Autofill for database properties, and admin controls such as spending caps.

How can a law firm use them?

UseTriggerOutput (for review)
Intake triageNew intake entrySummary, matter type, urgency and suggested lawyer
Deadline digestEvery MondayDeadlines in the next 14 days, grouped by lawyer
Matter status draftEvery FridayPlain-English status update per active matter
Overdue chaserDailyList of overdue actions with owners
Research taggingNew research noteTopic and jurisdiction tags, related matters

Why does structure matter more than prompts?

An agent asked to summarise a matter can only summarise what is recorded. If deadlines live in emails and next steps live in heads, the agent produces confident nonsense. Matters with current status, linked deadlines and actions with owners give it accurate context. Build the structure first; automate second.

Which safeguards should lawyers put in place?

  • Human review: no agent output goes to a client, court or counterparty unchecked.
  • Scope: give agents access only to the databases they need.
  • Confidentiality: review Notion's AI security practices and your obligations before enabling agents on client data.
  • Deadlines: agents can report recorded dates; they must never be the source of a calculated legal deadline.
  • Spend: set workspace and per-agent caps.
  • Record: keep a short policy of which agents run, on what, and who owns them.

What do Custom Agents cost?

Custom Agents moved to usage-based pricing through Notion credits, an add-on for Business and Enterprise plans, after a free beta. Pricing changes often, so check Notion's pricing page and release notes before planning firm-wide use.

How do you start safely?

  1. 1

    Pick one low-risk agent

A weekly internal deadline digest is a good first agent.

  2. 2

    Give it a narrow scope

Access to Deadlines and Matters only.

  3. 3

    Run it in parallel

Compare its digest with your own review for a month.

  4. 4

    Decide and document

Keep it, adjust it or switch it off, and record the decision.
