Three approaches compared
| Approach | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Template assembly | Fill a questionnaire; the tool inserts your approved text | Routine documents | Outdated template text |
| Clause library + AI | AI proposes clauses from your library | Contracts with variations | Library needs upkeep |
| Free-text generation | AI writes from a prompt | First drafts of non-standard items | Invented terms; missing formalities |

Build a clause library first
Whatever the generator, your best asset is a library of clauses you have used and trust. Give each clause a name, an owner, a last-reviewed date, and notes on when to use or avoid it. A Notion database with those properties works well and can be reused with any tool. The same database tells you which clauses are stale.
A review checklist
- Read the parties, date and definitions first; errors there spread everywhere.
- Check every cross-reference and defined term is used consistently.
- Compare against your standard template and mark each deviation.
- Confirm governing law, jurisdiction and formalities (execution, witnessing, stamping) for your jurisdiction.
- Have a second person check high-value documents.
Remember that confidentiality duties apply to what you paste in. Review the tool's data terms first.
Where LawyerOS fits
LawyerOS is a Notion template, not a document generator. LawyerOS Pro with AI ($39) includes a Research database and a Custom AI Agents page where you can keep clause notes and instructions, but it does not assemble documents or produce signatures. Use it to organise, and use a proper drafting tool for generation.
Frequently asked questions
- Can AI generate a legally valid contract?
- It can generate text, but validity depends on facts, law and execution formalities that a lawyer must confirm.
- Template or free-text, which is safer?
- Template assembly from your own approved text is generally more controlled.
- Do I need a clause library?
- It is not required, but it improves every drafting method and keeps standards consistent.
- Can I generate documents inside Notion?
- Notion's AI can draft text, but it will not apply jurisdiction-specific formatting or execution. Review carefully.
