What ChatGPT is
ChatGPT is the consumer interface for OpenAI's models. The current top model is GPT-5. The interface ships with built-in web search, image generation, voice, and Custom GPTs, which are reusable agents you build and share.
Where ChatGPT wins
Speed and breadth. The fastest tool for short questions, summaries, client comms drafts, and quick research that you will verify yourself. The web search is good. The voice mode is the best on the market for dictating first drafts on the move.
Custom GPTs for legal work
A Custom GPT is a saved configuration: instructions, knowledge files, a name, an icon. For a contracts lawyer, a Custom GPT for "Standard Form Diff" with the firm's standard contracts as knowledge files turns a fifteen-minute review into a three-minute one. Build them once, use them forever.
Confidentiality posture
On the consumer ChatGPT free and Plus tiers, OpenAI may use conversations for training unless you turn it off in settings. On Team and Enterprise, training is off by default. On the API, training is off by default. Read the full posture at /ai/confidentiality. Treat the free tier as a public forum.
