Gemini for lawyers

Gemini for lawyers: Google's long-context model, the Workspace integration, what it does well for legal work and where it fits a lawyer's tool stack.

What Gemini is

Gemini is Google's family of AI models. The current production tier is Gemini 2.5 Pro, with the next generation in preview. The standout feature for lawyers is the long context window, which can hold thousands of pages in a single conversation, and the deep Workspace integration in Gmail, Docs, and Drive.

Where Gemini wins

Anything that requires reading a lot of material at once. Discovery review across hundreds of documents. Comparing a new contract against a hundred existing ones. The model's ability to keep the entire corpus in its working memory at once is qualitatively different from working in chunks.

Workspace integration is the other reason. If your firm runs on Google Workspace, Gemini is already inside Gmail and Docs. The friction of switching apps disappears.

Confidentiality posture

Workspace customers get a contractual commitment that their content is not used to train Google's models. Consumer Gemini is different and should not be used for client work. See /ai/confidentiality.
