Clio Work vs Notion AI for solo lawyers: what each does, costs and leaves unknown

Clio Work is an AI workspace for legal research and analysis built on Clio's vLex acquisition, now sold standalone to smaller firms; Notion AI works on your own pages and databases. They solve different problems. Clio's price is not clearly published, so confirm it directly before comparing costs.

What is the difference in one table?

Last reviewed: 30 October 2026. 'Unknown' means we could not confirm it from sources we could open; Clio and Notion pages themselves were not retrievable in our environment, so everything attributed to them comes via LawNext and other coverage found in search.

What is Clio Work, and what changed in 2026?

Per LawNext's April 2026 report, Clio opened Clio Work, its AI workspace, to solo, small and mid-sized firms as a standalone product, removing the Clio Manage subscription as a prerequisite. The legal content behind it comes from vLex, acquired by Clio in a deal reported at about $1 billion. Coverage describes the price as not published on Clio's page, with $199 per user per month the most-cited launch figure and one pricing review listing it as demo-only. Confirm with Clio.

For comparison only, a secondary 2026 pricing blog puts Clio's core practice-management tiers at roughly $49 to $149 per user per month billed annually; that is a third-party figure, not Clio's own, and Clio is reported to have removed tier prices from its public page.

What does Notion AI do for a law practice?

Notion AI works on what is in your workspace: summarising meeting notes, filling properties, drafting from your pages, answering questions across your databases. Custom Agents (beta February 2026, billing from 4 May 2026) can perform multi-step tasks and are billed in credits. It has no built-in legal research database, so it does not tell you what the law is.

Notion's plan prices and bundling have changed; third-party articles disagree. Check notion.com/pricing for what your plan includes.

Which should a solo lawyer choose?

If your main need is...Lean towardsBecause
Researching and analysing lawClio Work or another legal research toolIt brings a legal corpus; Notion does not
Organising matters, deadlines and tasksA practice system (Notion, Clio Manage or another)Neither AI product organises your work by itself

Lowest, predictable costNotion with a one-time template and minimal agent useClio Work's price is unclear
Everything in one vendorCheck Clio's bundleWe could not confirm bundle terms

Many solos will use both a research tool and a workspace. The deciding questions are cost per user per month, data handling and how quickly you can verify the output.

What should I verify before paying either?

  • Current price per user, billing term and cancellation terms in writing.
  • Where client data is processed and how long it is retained, and whether it trains models.
  • Whether outputs cite sources you can open, and how you will check them.
  • Whether your bar or insurer expects disclosure or consent for AI use.
  • What happens to your data if you leave.

Where LawyerOS fits

We make LawyerOS and compete with Clio Manage rather than Clio Work. LawyerOS is a Notion template: Starter is $19 (matters and deadlines) and Pro with AI is $39 (eight linked databases and a Custom AI Agents page), each one-time. It has no legal research corpus, no trust accounting and no payments, and it relies on Notion for any AI features.

Frequently asked questions

What is Clio Work?
Clio Work is Clio's AI workspace for legal research, analysis and strategy. According to LawNext, it became available to solo and smaller firms as a standalone product in April 2026, without needing a Clio Manage subscription. Its research draws on legal content from Clio's vLex acquisition.
How much does Clio Work cost?
Clio's price is not clearly published. A figure of $199 per user per month was reported at launch, but secondary sources say it is unconfirmed and one lists it as demo-only. Ask Clio for a written quote before budgeting.
Can Notion AI do legal research?
Not in the sense of searching a legal database. Notion AI works over your workspace content and connected tools, so it can summarise and draft from your own material. For case law and statutes you need a legal research service, and you must verify citations.
Is Notion AI cheaper than Clio?
They are not like for like. Notion's agent credits cost $10 per 1,000 per its help page, and plan prices vary, while Clio Work's price is unclear. Compare total cost per user for the specific tasks you need, including a legal research subscription.
Do I need both Clio and Notion?
Not necessarily. Many solos use a practice system (Notion or Clio Manage) and, separately, a research tool. Decide which problems you have, price the combination, and avoid paying twice for overlapping practice-management features.
