The core idea: blocks, pages and databases
Text, headings, checklists, images and tables are all blocks. Pages hold blocks and can hold other pages. A database is a special page full of pages with shared properties. Master those three ideas and the rest follows.
How Notion compares with tools lawyers already use
| Tool | Strong at | Where Notion differs |
|---|---|---|
| Word | Long, formatted documents | Notion is better for connected notes, worse for formal drafting and redlining |
| Excel | Calculation and analysis | Notion records are pages with notes attached, but heavy maths is weaker |
| Practice software | Billing, trust accounting, court-rules integrations | Notion has none built in but is far more flexible |
| Communication | Notion is for organising work, not replacing correspondence |
What does that mean for a law practice?
Notion suits matter tracking, deadline lists, internal procedures, research notes and task management, especially for solo lawyers and small teams. It does not suit trust accounting, e-filing or anything where a regulated system of record is required. Our comparison with Clio sets this out honestly.
A first five minutes in Notion
- 1
Make a page
Click New page and give it a title such as Practice home.
- 2
Add blocks
Type / and add a heading, a to-do list and a table to feel how blocks behave.
- 3
Make a database
Type /table and choose a full-page database to see rows become pages.
- 4
Change the view
Switch the same data between table, board and calendar to see why views matter.
That is most of Notion's core idea. Everything else is a variation.
