Which Notion templates should a law firm know about?

A law firm needs templates for six jobs: tracking matters, tracking deadlines, recording time, managing clients, handling documents and keeping research. A good all-in-one template links all six; a narrow one does one well. The ten below mix both.

Disclosure: we make LawyerOS (entries 1 and 2), and MatterOS (entry 6) is by the same creator. We did not test the others in a live firm. We describe them only from what their public listings say, and prices change, so check the current price on each page.

What do the all-in-one templates (1 to 6) offer?

1 and 2. LawyerOS Starter and Pro with AI (ours)

Starter ($49) has a Matters database and a Deadlines database, with a home page that shows deadlines due this week and active matters sorted by key date. Pro with AI ($99) has eight linked databases: Matters, Actions, Time, Team, Evidence, Research, Clients and Invoices, with saved views such as Uninvoiced time and Overdue actions, a Quick Start Guide and a Custom AI Agents page. Both are one-time payments.

3. Law Desk

Listed in Notion's gallery as a small law firm operating system with one dashboard for clients, cases, tasks and billables.

4. Law Firm OS

Listed as a connected system for clients, cases, billing and operations.

5. Legal Case Management

Its listing describes linked databases for cases, contacts, staff, appointments, billable items and documents.

6. MatterOS

A matter-centred system built on a six-part method (Matter, Actions, Time, Team, Evidence, Research) with a dashboard and prompt pack. Same creator as LawyerOS.

What do the lighter and single-purpose templates (7 to 10) do?

Notion for Lawyers (Basic) is hosted in Notion's own template gallery. Its listing says it was built by a full-time lawyer and offers quick-capture buttons that sort notes and to-dos into client folders, plus pre-filled pages for legal research, calls and meetings. A separate Gumroad page for it showed a pay-what-you-want style price in search results, so confirm the current price.

Entries 8 to 10 are separate single-purpose listings titled Case Management, Legal Research and Legal Document Automation on Gumroad. Their listings describe a matter and document tracker, a research organiser for statutes, case law and precedents, and a contract and memo status tracker. We have not tested them.

Which template types does every practice need?

Whatever you buy, check that these types exist and are linked. If one is missing, you can build it in an hour.

What can no Notion template do?

Notion is a flexible workspace, not a regulated accounting or docketing system. No template should be your only record for client trust money, and none computes court deadlines from jurisdiction-specific rules for you. Keep trust accounting in dedicated, compliant software and verify computed deadlines against the applicable rules. Check your regulator for what your jurisdiction requires.

Where LawyerOS fits

If you want a ready structure rather than assembling one, LawyerOS Starter ($49) covers matters and deadlines, and Pro with AI ($99) adds the other six databases. It is a Notion template, not practice-management software, and it does not do trust accounting. If a listing above matches your practice better, use it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Notion template for a small law firm?
There is no single best. Small firms usually want matters, deadlines, time, clients and invoices linked together, which the all-in-one options provide. Solo lawyers can start with matters and deadlines only. Judge by whether every record links to a matter and whether you can edit the properties.
Are there free Notion templates for lawyers?
Some exist, such as the Notion for Lawyers (Basic) listing, whose Gumroad page appeared with a pay-what-you-want price in search results. Free templates tend to cover notes and capture rather than full practice workflows. Confirm the current price on the listing before relying on it.
Can a Notion template replace Clio?
For some solo and small practices it can cover matters, tasks, deadlines and basic time tracking. It does not provide trust accounting, built-in e-billing or court-rules calendaring. Decide based on whether you need those features. Our separate Notion versus Clio article walks through the trade-offs.
Should I buy several single-purpose templates or one system?
One linked system is usually easier, because separate templates create separate databases that must be related to a single Matters database. If you buy single-purpose templates, plan an afternoon to connect them with relations, or you will search in several places.
Do Notion templates work on the free plan?
Templates are duplicated into your workspace and databases and views generally work on the free plan. Some features, including database automations beyond Slack notifications, need a paid plan. Check Notion's current plan page and the template's own notes before you buy.
